We were greeted with the same weather conditions as last week, a pouring deluge of cold rain but a very different and smart club house welcomed us to Farnham.
As the ref blew his whistle he must have signalled for the rain to begin, as it started to chuck it down. Wimbledon were consistent in conceding penalties throughout the game, and it started from the get-go. Great kicking from Cameron though saw the ball moved out of Wimbledon territory and into the Farnham 22. A scrum for Wimbledon was built on by the forwards, and good drives from the entire pack saw Alfie pick the ball from the back of a maul and go over to score an early try, 5-0, combined with a great conversion from Archie making it 7-0.
The scrum had a successful match and were dominant throughout. The scrum defended the ball on the Wimbledon try line bravely but still needed more communication to gain even more success. There were four good phases of play from the Wimbledon offence. Toby Russell making his Wimbledon competitive debut, drove over his first Wimbledon try. This was to be one of the highlights of an excellent performance.
Now it was a 12-0 lead with Archie narrowly missing a difficult conversion. From the restart Wimbledon were still conceding penalties, however with good scrummaging and counter rucking from the forwards, there was a turnover in possession. The ball was then quickly ushered by the backs to the right hand side of the pitch, and Aidan was able to drive over for the 3rd try. Archie was able to kick through to add the extra two points, making it 19-0.
The ball was kicked to Rob from the restart, and he followed up with a chip through, which he recovered and was very unlucky not to score! With Jodi finding himself out in the backs, the ball was shipped to him from Sam, and unselfishly passed to Matt Rogers, who was unlucky not to score! With the rain preventing any slick moves from happening, the ball was lost but a Wimbledon lineout gained. The Dons gained a penalty from it, and with a tap and go given to Toby, he crashed over for his second try of the game, a fantastic conversion by Archie, which was complimented on by many spectators, extended Wimbledons lead to 26-0.
Aidan received the ball from the kick off and was unlucky with his kick through. Wimbledon gained a scrum 5 yards out, which was collected by Alfie quickly and given out to Cameron who ran a great line. He was able to score under the posts, making it an easy kick for Archie for once! 33-0 at half time.
The half time break was cut short due to thunder, so Dons were raring to go! Cameron was able to put a good kick through, and it was chased well by Rory Merz. A good carry by Matt Rogers from the breakdown saw a scrum awarded to the Dons. Cyril, who came on to add to the already dominant scrum, was able to power over to make it 38-0.
Shortly after the restart, more pressure was put on Farnham as Wimbledon piled players into attack on the left. Toby, who played brilliantly throughout the day, combined well with Matt who picked up well at the back of the scrum and charged through to score the final try of the day, as the score was 43-0.
Wimbledon with a very strong performance, taking them to top of the table, a very promising start and signs of showing great potential!
