The Year 5 and Year 6 children of Wimbledon Park Primary School were the latest to benefit from “Wimbledon RFC in the Community” when coaches from the club recently spent a day at the school giving rugby taster sessions to over 200 boys and girls as part of the school’s “Health and Wellbeing Week.” In partnership with Zion Sports, the programme aims to encourage and develop new players from non-traditional rugby playing schools, with the coaches drawing on the experiences gained both as players but also from their Sunday mornings with Wimbledon’s Mini and Youth organisation. “The children absolutely loved it,” said Sophie Brunt, one of the school’s Year 6 teachers. “Some of our pupils already play mini-rugby but this was a great opportunity to spread the word about the sport, and especially its inclusive nature, to a new and wider audience. As part of our programme we wanted to introduce the pupils to new physical activities, and the coaches did a terrific job in doing just that. We are all very grateful to them.”
